Existen diferentes formas de hacer sugerencias en inglés y según el nivel del examen a que nos vayamos a presentar, usaremos una u otra.
BASIC
-Do you want to…
-Would you like to…

INTERMEDIATE
-Let’s…
-Why don’t we…
-I thought we might…
ADVANCED
-Do you fancy + ing…
-What/How about…
-Are you in the mood to + infinitive…
-I suggest + ing…
-Do you feel like + ing…
PROFICIENCY
-Shall we…
-Are you up for…
-Do you feel up to + ing
¿»WHAT ABOUT/ HOW ABOUT» se usan con gerundio o infinitivo?
a)Con gerundio:
Tanto «what about» como «how about» se pueden usar con gerundio.
Example: What/How about going to the movies?
b)Con infinitivo:
Sin embargo, si queremos usar infinitivo, solo podremos usar «how about». Además, tendremos que especificar quién realiza la acción del verbo.
Example: How about I pick you up to go to the movies?
c)Con una frase nominal:
Por otro lado, «how/what about» se pueden usar con una frase nominal:
-How about a walk to the woods?
-What about a glass of wine?
-How about a game of tennis?
WHY NOT/ WHY DON’T. ¿Cuándo usar una u otra?
a)General suggestions. (Anuncios o sugerencias generales)
-Why not have a break now and then instead of so much work?
-Why not pamper yourself and have a spa day?
-Why not devote more time to ourselves?
b)Specific suggestions
-Why don’t we go to the movies this evening?
-Why don’t you take up an English course?
-Why don’t you just blank her?
Tenemos que tener cuidado al usar SUGGEST porque se cometen muchos errores
a)Suggest + noun phrase
-Norman suggested a holiday (to me)
b)Suggest+ that clause
(En situaciones informales podemos omitir THAT)
-Norman suggested (that) I had a holiday.
c)Suggest + ing
(Se usa cuando NO se menciona a la persona que lo hará, porque se entiende por el contexto)
-Norman suggested having a holiday.
d)Suggested + should
(Cuando «suggest» está en pasado, se puede usar SHOULD)
-Norman suggested that I should have a holiday.
Errores comunes con SUGGEST
Se tiende a usar SUGGEST de la misma forma en que usamos WANT, es decir: «Suggest someone to do something». ¡Eso está mal!
-Norman suggested me to have a holiday
También está mal usar el infinitivo detrás de SUGGEST:
-Norman suggested to have a holiday
¿Cómo lo diríamos?
-Norman suggested I should have a holiday
-Norman suggested a holiday
-Norman suggested having a holiday
-Norman suggested (that) I should have a holiday
SHALL para hacer sugerencias
Usaremos SHALL para hacer sugerencias en nivel avanzado de inglés. Los nativos, en el día a día hacen sugerencias usando SHALL. Sin embargo, es verdad que a los hispanohablantes nos cuesta un poco más usarlo, porque tendemos a asociarlo con el futuro. Es por ello que cuando un hablante no nativo de inglés usa SHALL para hacer una sugerencia, los examinadores se sorprenden de forma positiva.
¿Qué usos tiene SHALL, aparte del futuro formal?
El futuro formal se usa muy poco y los nativos en su día a día suelen usar SHALL en las siguientes situaciones:
OFERTAS
-Shall I help you carry the bags?
-Shall I do that for you?
No usamos CAN para hacer ofertas en que no tengamos un beneficio. Es decir, en las tiendas, nos pueden decir: «May I help you/ Can I help you?», porque buscan el beneficio final de la venta. Es decir, es como si nos pidiesen permiso. Sin embargo, cuando te ofreces para algo, como ayudar a cargar con las bolsas de alguien, no buscas ningún beneficio y sonaría un poco raro si pidieses permiso. En este caso, haces una oferta y por eso usas SHALL.
